HOW DO YOU TAKE KRATOM POWDER WITHOUT THE BITTER TASTE?

How Do You Take Kratom Powder Without the Bitter Taste?

Mix kratom powder into something sweet, acidic or thick, like orange juice, chocolate milk or a fruit smoothie. Keep it cold, drink it quickly and have a chaser ready. If you want no taste at all, switch to capsules, tablets or gummies. Capsules and tablets hold the same ground leaf in a form you swallow without tasting it.

Why kratom powder tastes so bitter

Kratom powder is simply dried, ground leaf, and the leaf’s alkaloids, led by mitragynine, are bitter compounds. Mitragynine is also poorly soluble in water, so the powder doesn’t dissolve. It floats as fine grit and coats your whole tongue.

One popular trick doesn’t help as much as people think. Pinching your nose dulls kratom’s grassy, earthy flavor, since that part comes from smell. But bitterness is detected on the tongue itself, and Oxford researcher Charles Spence has shown that the familiar claim that 80% of taste is really smell has little evidence behind it. So hold your nose if it helps, and plan on a sweet or salty mixer to handle the bitterness.

6 ways to stop the bitter taste of kratom powder

  1. Add something sweet. Sugar is one of the most reliable bitter blockers; in a Monell Chemical Senses Center study, sugar reduced the bitterness of bitter medicines for both adults and children. Honey, juice or a sweetened milk all work.
  2. Add a tiny pinch of salt. Researchers found that salt suppresses bitterness in mixtures, which is why a few grains in a smoothie or juice take the edge off.
  3. Use sweet-tart juice. Orange juice and lemonade pair sugar with acidity, and the strong flavor crowds out the leaf. Our guide to mixing kratom powder lists more juices that work.
  4. Go thick and creamy. Smoothies, chocolate milk, yogurt and applesauce keep the grit suspended so it doesn’t land on your tongue.
  5. Keep it cold and drink it fast. Ice-cold drinks taste less intense, and sipping slowly just gives the powder time to settle and stick.
  6. Line up a chaser. A few sips of juice or a bite of fruit clears whatever’s left.

Weigh your serving before you mix. Teaspoons vary, and our grams per teaspoon guide and serving size guide show how much.

How to toss and wash kratom powder

The toss and wash method gets kratom down in about ten seconds, with the least time on your tongue.

  1. Pour 4 to 6 oz of orange juice or another sweet drink and keep it within reach.
  2. Measure your serving onto a spoon.
  3. Take a sip of juice and hold it in your mouth.
  4. Tip the powder into your mouth, onto the liquid, not the dry tongue.
  5. Swallow right away, then chase with the rest of the juice.

Don’t inhale while the powder’s in your mouth. Split a larger serving into two smaller tosses. For other preparation methods, see our full guide on how to take kratom powder.

Skip the bitter taste entirely

Capsules and tablets contain the same plain leaf as our kratom powder, graded to the same mitragynine minimums. You just don’t taste it.

Kratom taste FAQ

What does kratom powder taste like?

Kratom powder tastes bitter and earthy, often compared to strong green tea or matcha with a grassy finish. The bitterness comes from the leaf’s alkaloids. Because the powder doesn’t dissolve, it also has a gritty texture.

Does lemon juice make kratom less bitter?

A little. Lemon adds sourness that competes with bitterness, but it works best with something sweet, like lemonade or lemon with honey. On its own, lemon juice makes the drink sharper rather than smoother.

Can you mix kratom powder with coffee?

You can, and coffee’s own bitterness hides kratom well. Keep in mind that you’re pairing kratom with caffeine, so start with a smaller serving of each. Our notes on kratom and coffee cover the details.

Does old kratom taste more bitter?

Powder stored in humid or warm conditions can taste stale or musty. Keep it sealed in a cool, dark, dry place and check our tips on how to store kratom to keep it fresh.
